Stratum Corneum
Protective barrierThe outermost layer, made of dead, flattened skin cells packed with keratin. It's the body's literal physical shield against water loss and the outside world — and it's what facials and exfoliating treatments mostly work on.
Stratum Lucidum
Translucent bufferTechnically only present in thick skin — palms and soles. Most skin on the body skips straight from the corneum to the granulosum below it.
Stratum Granulosum
Cells begin to hardenCells here start producing keratin and losing their nucleus, beginning the process of becoming the tough, dead cells above them.
Stratum Spinosum
Structural strengthThe thickest of the epidermal sublayers. Cells here are linked by small spiny junctions that give skin its flexibility and strength.
Stratum Basale
New skin is bornThe deepest epidermal layer, sitting right on the boundary with the dermis. Stem cells here divide continuously and push new cells upward — and it's where pigment-producing melanocytes live.
